No, they "allowed" clones of their old 16 bit machines. But they never allowed clones of their 32 bit machines. In hindsight, who knows....

Realto is out to lunch-o on this one. :-) The Mac has been 32-bit
since the beginning. I suggest a look at the Motorola 68000 series of
chips to see what's true.

The clones were much later, and used the PowerPC chip, which was also
32-bit.

The only headway they are making is with their Ipods. And even there, they will soon be blown out of the water. There is no reason to carry a gadget that only handles one or two functions.

0 for 2. They've gained marketshare with the Mac, and people love
their iPods. The killer piece of the pie is the iTunes music store and
Apple has been making a mint off of that.

Don't getme wrong, for what they are their computers are good, even if the new onesDO run a proprietary version of Linux.

Meanwhile, they've got the market for mobile music players sewn up.

Macs don't run a "proprietary version of Linux" either. (There
actually can't be any proprietary versions of Linux because of the
GPL.) Mac OS X draws from Mach, FreeBSD, and the GNU project. Aqua and
some other parts that sit on top of the rest are proprietary, but they
have nothing to do with Linux either. (They trace their roots to
NeXT.)

But if they want to keep up the pressure, they just can't sit back on theiPod. There are already cheaper versions that do as much.

People want iPods.

Apple isn't sitting on their laurels either. They keep coming out with
new things.

Hey, Apple has made some blunders, but they're usually pretty good at
making products that function well and that people want. They've also
been consistently noted for having some of the best support and
service around.

Even though Mac OS X is not the market leader, Apple ships a lot of
computers. They seem to be doing _something_ right. :-)

Besides that, those Mac vs. PC commercials are great! :-)

I gotta crash...

Well, when I looked at an Apple laptop a girl at work has, I sure didn't
have any trouble navigating the OS!

And, her BF is a Linux gearhead, and he figured it out right off the bat

I can't remember which distro it looked the most like, but I had seen it
before!

It's enough unlike vanilla Unix to give some people fits. :-)

There are similarities between the Unix underpinnings of OS X and
other Unix or Unix-like OSes, but OS X really is a different beast
than Linux in a lot of ways.
