Starter / Starting Problems
Hey, I’ve got an ’84 4cyl. As of yesterday, there seems to be a
problem with the starter. It seems like when I leave it sit for a
while, it will start right up, but after I shut it off and try to
start it up soon after that, it won’t start at all.
It cranks normally and starts up the first time, but when I try to
start it after that the dash lights flutter dimly, and I hear this
clicking noise... which I’m assuming is coming from the starter.
The starter is only 2 months old, and I believe it’s one of those
cheap starters where it will get damaged if you try to start it
without a fully charged battery. (less than 9 volts) Could that have
been the problem? The battery isn’t that old either, and was fully
charged when I replaced the starter.
Anyone know what the problem could be?

I have some new information. I just tried starting it again, and nothing happened. There’s no lights, no cranking. The car is just compeletely dead..

There is a wiring problem with the cables that run from your battery
to the starter. The main car power, lights, etc, comes off of wires
that are connected to the starter. So, either the cable from the
battery to the starter is bad/loose or the ground cable from either
the battery to the block or the battery to the chassis is bad. First
things first, use a volt meter or test light to test for power right
at the battery terminals. If you have power there, then check for power
at the starter terminals, etc, until you isolate the break in the
circuit.

I have some new information. I just tried starting it again, andnothing happened. There’s no lights, no cranking. The car is justcompeletely dead..

Check the small red wire from the battery terminal to where its
connected to the lug most likely the lug it is crimped to is where its
falling apart. This is where the all the power for car comes from ie
lights horn radio ect.
