A few possibilities:
The oil pressure switch is defective.
You are running the wrong weight oil.
The engine bearings are worn and pressure truly is low in spite of the
machine not using oil.
The oil pump could be worn.
The oil pump suction screen is clogged.
The oil filter is plugged.
An oil passage is restricted.
As a starting point you should have the pressure measured with a good gauge
to find out if it is in spec or not.

Hi Experts, I drive a beautiful frame-off restoration '72 Olds Cutlass 350 Rocket 2-door hardtop. Problem - the oil warning light stays on when the car is warm and idling in Drive gear. If I change to Neutral or Park the light goes off. There is no problem with the oil pressure - the old dear hardly burns any oil at all. However, since I too am an old dear, I am a sitting duck for repair shops (I know little about the mechanics of cars) who are prone to spend ing 5 hours at $90/hr doing "repairs". Would any of you experts know what could be causing this problem? If I were able to suggest to the repair shop where to look and what to do, it would be very helpful indeed. Many thanks for your assistance, Joan
