DS ---
Think I found the answer to a quick update --- the Nakamitch C D unit
that's been wired to just plug and play.
No amplifier to replace the Nokia (under the 993's pax seat) is plug
and play --- but the Nokia is fine for me anyway.
Here's what I got from a Sacramento CA guy who specializes in Porsche
Audio.
The comment about Lucas electrical systems related to a story that I
told him about screaming tough the Northern California countryside in
a Sunbeam Tiger, at 1am, and losing my headlights in an electrical
short (they were not fused) ---

don't have a plug and play setup that goes in to replace the factory
amp easily, but the headunit I can prewire for the harness in the
dash. For the amplifier installation, there is some work required
involving splicingg into the existing amp connector/harness there-but
it's pretty straight-forward since all of the factory speaker wiring
is good and terminates there-very handy indeed. The power wire for
the amp does need to be run to the battery and fused (hehe, unlike
Lucas, 'prince of darkness!)...

Hi Mat,
thanks for the email, it sounds like you've got a super clean, low
mileage 993. giddyup.
For an oem looking headunit, the Nakamichi CD400 kicks butt and has
auxiliary input for your handheld MP3 player, and it's $449.95. The
next model up is the CD500, which adds the ability to read MP3 and WMA
encoded CD's, but jumps in price to $680-doh!
The challenge with the hifi equipped 993 is interfacing with the Nokia
amplifier-but it can be done and I can provide some tips and
guidance....
I'll also attach a document that covers my recommendations for 993
upgrades, though I realize that you're not looking for other sound
upgrades...
many more questions are welcome, and I can supply parts and detailed
instructions with any equipment you buy, with tech support and great
warranty protection since I'm an authorized dealer for everything we
sell.

Spoken to some folks with knowledge ... still don't have my hands on an answer: Want to upgrade my audio system in a 993 with audio package (not digital package -- just the extra speakers and the Nokia amplifier). Want something with either an MP3 player input --- of the ability to play MP3 disks. Want something that matches the interior (no wild flashing lights please). And finally --- would prefer plug and play --- no big hassles on wiring so I can undue if required. I know that the new Euro-spec Beckers have all of the above --- but have been told that they lack ability to tune US AM radio stations. Advice by anybody who has 'been there' is appreciated.
