High reading on temp gauge
On my '87 944, I notice that the temp gauge is not in the middle where I
think it should be. It's not in the red while driving, but it looks too
close for my comfort. I don't have any engine overheating, but I'm leary of
driving it like this. I know I should take it in the shop, but can't affort
that expense right now. Might this be something to be concerned about?

High reading on temp gauge
My 87 944 is the same.
It never actually overheats but some times gets close to the red. New
thermostat and fan switch fitted. but no different. Fan usually runs for a
few mins after stopping.
Suspect this may reflect a slightly blocked rad at this age and mileage.
(145,000)
I just drive and enjoy and do not drive it too hard. after all it is 19
years old.

something is wrong - I oversee 3 944 cars, 85, and 87 vintage, none come
close to overheating ever unless there is something wrong like a broken
radiator hose. have you changed coolant? is the oil good? is the MAF
working correctly? does it run well?

Oil and coolant seem ok and there is no loss of coolant.
What does MAF mean?

High reading on temp gauge
My 87 944 does the same - the gauge goes just below the red - but only when
the ac is on and a hot day, and going 70 mph - especially up hill.
My 944 has 250K miles and it runs like a new car and my last 83 944 had
550,000 miles - original engine and tranny - it only got retired when a kid
hit my rear. And I changed the oil as the manual said - about every 8000
miles. Just proves the 3000 oil change intervals are a crock.

High reading on temp gauge
MAF - is the air flow sensor (mass air flow) that lies between the air
cleaner and the throttle plate.
I had one car that was running hot (and generally acting bad) due to MAF
problems - the sensor was just plain worn out. but the car should NOT run
hot - I've never seen this when the car (even with very high miles) is
running right. maybe the fan switch is not working right? maybe the water
pump is damaged? maybe the thermostat is not working right? maybe the gauge
is wrong (measure actual temperature)?
