dump the junk filter and get an OEM type filter. The engine is tuned
for a specific type of airflow. Contrary to what many aftermarket
manufacturers try to tell you, your engine can't and won't take in any
more air than it needs to run. The engine is designed to expect some
air restriction and the computer is programmed to compensate for
that. The CFM in the OEM filter will allow more than what the engine
needs.

What's probably happened is that by putting in a higher flow air
filter has caused a change in the air/fuel mixture and now it's
running too lean...not a good thing for an engine to run in. The
computer is trying to compensate for the increased air flow by adding
more fuel, which is probably causing an over rich condition thus
tripping the check engine light. (The trac light will trip for just
about anything short of bad wipers).

You won't notice any performance difference but your wallet will
notice a difference at the fuel pump because your MPG will suffer.
