Saab 9000 v6
Can you help, My timing belt seems to have slipped a tooth, whilst driving
there was smoke and clutch burning smell comming from cam belt cover,
engine now runs rough, is there a nylon bush that wears causing this prob?
and how do i go about replacing it, i presume the drive belt will also need
changing. Are the timing marks easy to find?, thanks,

You could be in for a world of hurt. The V6 is an interference engine - if
the cam timing is lost, the valves can hit the pistons. IF (big if) you only
jumped one tooth, the heads may be alright. Best case, you need a belt,
tensioner kit, and about $300 US worth of special tools to set the cam
timing. Worst case - bent/broken valves and damaged pistons. I would leave
this job to the pro's.

Mike,
It sounds to me like it was actually the serpentine belt that you are
having problems with, not the timing belt. If the timing belt slipped
enough to cause smoke and a burning smell, you'd have lnown it instantly
by the loud bang from the engine compartment and the engine dying
immediately.

Forgot to mention there was a squeeling noise before any problems went away
then problem accured. ive pulled back timing cover to look at belt mot
fully taken off yet as dont want to take off drive belt. Timing belt has
just started fraying on one side, if i press on the belt the top pully
wheel slightly moves, is this a tension wheel? or has something worn.

The tensioner pulley is on the left side. It has an eccentric cam
assembly to allow give and take on the belt. The pulley in the top
center between the two heads is supposed to be stationary, as is the one
on the right side.
