Default 997 computer "faults"

Can disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it cause problems for the
997's computer? I was having a problem and briefly disconnected the
battery--after which the PSM failure light went on, then off a day later.
Plus the alarms went off suddenly, the following day, for no reason. The
dealer said they had to reset things after dozens of "faults" were found.
What does this mean? What if the battery runs down on its own?

(That's what happened first of all--it was discharged overnight...and I'm
still not sure how that happened, except that the fan was running when I
went to bed. Get this, the rear spoiler had extended itself by the next
morning when the battery was dead. Weird stuff....) Anyway, the window
remained in the wrong position after I recharged the battery--and according
to the manual, it can be reset with a command sequence when power is
reconnected.

When power is reconnected. That's what the manual said.

So I disconnected and re-connected the battery. The dealer says I should
bring the car in and not do anything. Fine. Ok. Then the silly manual should
warn against doing that. At any rate, I'm not convinced there isn't
something wrong with the car, though, because it was acting strangely
beforehand...but beyond that, my question is:

Shouldn't the system be immune from problems when something as simple as a
battery cable is connected? Even a cheap VCR reverts to factory defaults
after a power interruption. And a car is notorious for electrical
transients, and should be engineered to withstand spikes and surges. What's
up with this "faults" business? I wonder whether the car has electrical
problems that have nothing to do with the battery cable...

don't know for sure about 997, but the 993s can get confused and lead you to
need to go through a rather tricky drive cycle to reset the OBDII cycle
flags when you disconnect the battery for an extended period of time - this
is why it's handy to have an OBD reader to give you a clue.
