Has anyone got any info on the Y721 magna engine as I'm trying to install one in my 1988 Pajero NF (6G72) anyone know anything about the block shape and engine mount placements
|
Historically Mitsubishi used the same bell housing mount points (ie bolts on
the block) for engine families. eg all the 4G60 series engines can be used
with any of the F5M20|30 series transmissions, regardless of the original
engine (eg the 4G15, 4G90 series). Sometimes the flywheel needs to be
changed or a different starter is required.
The same would apply the the 6G series engines as well. Most likely, though
I haven't checked, your Pajero trans will bolt on to the Y721. The only way
to really know is take a bell housing and starter and try it.
The engine mounts may be an issue, as the Y721 is designed for a FWD car
with side mounts and roll stoppers, and the Pajero is a conventional front
engine 4WD. There may or may not be engine mount points on the bottom front
(or bottom center) of the block like your 6G72.
The Y721 has a mount on the front top for the support to the Magna frame. In
the Pajero this could I guess be used for an engine steady bar if necessary.
There may be available bolt points on the block that could be used for
attatching engine mounts. On the 4G63 for example, the AC compressor mount
points are ideal. I can't recall whats on the other side of the block: its
never been an issue.
So ... for the Y721, you are going to have to start looking closely at the
6G72 and measuring and noting the differences. Be prepared to fabricate (or
have fabricated) a variety of bits and pieces as needed.
Other issues that come to mind are:
- if your 88 has a carburetor, you will have to run the fuel injection fuel
pump and the additional lines to the tank.
- In any case you'll need the schematics for 88 and the donor Magna to
adjust the harness to suit the Y721 ECU.
- the exhaust manifolds are almost certainly different in shape and
positoin, requiring new front pipes to be facbricated.
- the Y721 sump may not clear the Pajero mechanicals, and I doubt that the
6G72 sump will fit the Y721.
You may find that its less work to just rebuild the (or another) 6G72.
