What about Google Groups?
Google used to be "Deja News" (AKA Deja Snooze, cuz it's so slow), but it'sa major company.

It was never designed to be a newsreading service. It was just a
Usenet archive.

Google has been repurposing it as part of their plan to have all the
world use Google. They are working toward your never leaving Google's
site, no matter what you're using your computer for. :-)

Web-based news reading has never impressed me. People rag on OE's news
reader all the time, but I'd rather have to set it up and plug a server into
it, than to deal with Google, etc.

I used Agent for a while, but even that wasn't as good for reading, IMO.

In which case, they're going to have to work a LOT harder to get more people
to use Google Groups to read & post on a regular basis. It's klutzy & a
PITA to use, IMO. I've used it only as a last-ditch deal when my usual news
server's been 'down', or if I'm in transition between PC's & OE hasn't been
configured correctly yet. Which, thank goodness, hasn't been often. People
crab about Outlook Express (not me, I like it fine), but it is *much* easier
& more efficient than reading/posting via Google Groups.

Web-based news isn't so great in my opinion either. :-)

I've been using Agent for over a decade. I guess I'm just used to it.

I won't use Outlook Express because of its history of security holes.
I won't use IE for the same reason.

*knock-knock* it's okay if you do your settings right.

I looked into Agent after hearing accolades about it, but didn't like its
format. Stuck w/OE.

No, it really isn't. There are some basic flaws in much of MS's
software that changing your settings won't help. IE is worse than OE,
but OE uses the IE engine for rendering, so an IE flaw can even bring
down someone who only uses OE.

The first thing I recommend to people is to switch from OE and IE to
Thunderbird and Firefox. They're designed a bit better and their
security record is better by far.

Vista may solve the problem, if it ever gets here, and if they
actually did things the right way. (I haven't tried it yet; I'm just
going by their descriptions of what they're doing to tighten
security.)

If you really want to avoid problems with viruses, spyware, identity
theft, trojans, etc. then you should buy a Mac. :-)

Linux is another alternative, and is also more secure in general than
Windows is.

Until enough people buy into this argument & switch over, thus also making
Macs likely targets for the writers of viruses, worms, etc...

Unless a person has minimal technical skills & knoweledge, & therefore has
no clue (moi, par example) what on earth Linux is... And has no desire to
find out (KISS motto works fine for me!).
