92 Integra RPM Oscillations Problem
I want to start by saying that I am a computer guy, not a car guy.
So I am having a problem with my 1992 Acura Integra in which the tachometer goes haywire after accelerating past 3000 rpms. The vibrations of the car can confirm that the tachometer is reporting properly and it isn't a bad meter. The oscillations in the engines rpms have gotten to the point of causing the engine to stall. Once it goes above 3000, I observe the tachometer bouncing up to 5000 and down to the point of engine stall. The issue is somewhat transient, in that, sometimes it will only bounce a little and sometimes to the extremes mentioned above, but it always happens a little. The problem occurs even in all gears even in neutral. The problem occurs whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged. It's worst in 5th gear at the highway speeds, but has stalled in 3rd gear before. While the problem does occur when I gas the engine with the clutch engaged, it is very significantly less of oscillations. I recently had an issue with the car not starting that turned out to be a bad ignition coil (now fixed), so I was leaning towards the ignition system. If a timing belt jumps then the engine wouldn't balance itself back out by itself; if the cam shaft was damaged then it would happen at lower rpms as well; I don't want to change out the whole expensive distributor off of a probably bad guess. When it gets bad I engage the clutch let the engine idle for a second and then return to driving to keep it from stalling in motion. This and avoiding highways has worked for me, but I fear I am going to seriously damage the car worse if I don't isolate and repair the issue soon.
Not sure what to do and I can't just format and reinstall the os because it's a car and not a computer.
