Unhappy Space Star engine over revving

Please can someone help urgently. I am a disabled woman with very little knowledge of the technicalities of car engines.
I have a 2000, X reg 1.8 Spacestar Automatic GTi which has always been extremely reliable until yesterday. When i switched the engine on it sounded like a boy racer revving up at the traffic lights, and i didnt even have my foot on the accelerator! Then the car wouldn't go into reverse. Called out RAC who couldnt even get a true diagnostic reading as it was all over the place, over revving and then dying out altogether. He towed it to a local garage as there is no dealer where i live. Now garage tells me its not worth repairing as will cost almost as much as car worth to repair! (around 2k)!! Surely something can be done?
