98 Camry Service Questions
We brought in our 98 Camry V6 for a major service at 116,000 mi and received an extensive list of recommended repairs and prices. Would appreciate comments (even insults) from any of you who know a bit about the internals of this car.
1. 4 tires $556
They stated they were bald (actually just about to wear bars) but I concede this one and will replace at Costco.
2. Front Struts and Supports $1,050
These have been rattling for about 20K miles. The rattle is not too bad and the price has kept me from doing the job on a car this old. If I had it done, would expect an independent would do at considerable discount. Curious to know ramifications (if any) of not replacing.
3. Alignment (part of item 2) $89.95
No comment on this one.
4. Replace spark plugs $180
Seems like a lot for plugs. Understand these can be hard to get to, but is this a reasonable price?
5. Replace Timing Belt $330
Have read all the threads on this one. Am happy to run the car until it breaks and then tow it for service.
6. Replace Front Seals $195
Stated they are leaking. The engine looks clean and I do not see any leaks in the driveway or any smoke from the engine. I am not sure where the seals are located so I have to claim ignorance.
7. Replace Water Pump $450
I suppose the timing belt threads covered this one. I do get the feeling they are double dipping on labor if this is changed with the timing belt.
8. Replace Valve Cover Gaskets $695
I am ignorant on this one, but again note that the engine is very clean.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Given my lack of knowledge and desire to do the repairs myself, I am trying to decide whether to do these repairs and keep the car or cut my losses and buy a new car.
Thanks,
Dave
